INTERVIEW: Denise Marsa gives the low-down on upcoming album 'PIVOTAL'

We chat to award-winning singer-songwriter, producer and keyboardist Denise Marsa about her triumphant musical return, upcoming album 'PIVOTAL' and hopelessly romantic single 'Kiss Me In The Rain'...

INTERVIEW: Denise Marsa gives the low-down on upcoming album 'PIVOTAL'

1 . You’re making a return with you first release since 2022 with comeback single ‘Kiss Me In The Rain’, ahead of new album ‘PIVOTAL’.  What prompted you to create ‘Kiss Me In The Rain’? Loving and being loved. It was written as we all started to reconnect again, as life was opening up again, after the pandemic.  Kissing for me is like the best, the ultimate way to figure out of something is going to be more than a friendship…it starts the ball rolling!

2. Kiss Me In The Rain is a passionate picture of longing, enhanced by vivid imagery. What was your approach to writing melodies and lyrics that captured its romantic lyrical essence? I was on the beach, and I heard the lyric and melody in my head as I walked. I recorded it on my phone and when I got back to the city, I picked it up again at my keyboard. I wanted it to have few words, however words that mattered. Like phrases…with lots of space.  I wanted there to be a bit of a mysterious, curious vibe, sort of how things start with a new love interest. You step in, you step back, you access, you think, you feel, or maybe you dive right in! Ha! It’s about the various time each of us need to approach intimacy and letting your heart be open and to trust a new person in your life.

3. ‘Kiss Me In The Rain’ adopts a commercial style whilst maintaining its engaging story on loneliness and desire. Does the majority of ‘PIVOTAL’ use a similar combination? I think yes, and then some. It’s a very mixed genre album with my voice and the production keeping it all together and creating this flow, a roller coaster ride, and perhaps even a ride in a gondola, or on a sailboat, maybe even a train. It moves in many directions mostly looking forward and with some looking back, with several different tempos. The 'Until Dawn' remixes are also adding so much to the texture of the album, and even though only one remix will be on it, I feel their energy and their work adding to the overall excitement around ‘PIVOTAL’.

4. Did you come across any unique challenges or creative discoveries during the making of ‘Kiss Me In The Rain’?I’d have to say, it all just arrived and fell into place. I felt I was discovering a different side to me, and my work and it was good. I was inspired, as it was the first track I wrote for ‘PIVOTAL’.

5. Is ‘Kiss Me In The Rain’ a result of your natural evolution as an artist, or is it more of a departure from your usual sound?Kind of both, evolution, and departure. I have always been a bit contrary…

6. You’re an established name in the dance-pop scene, winning over audiences worldwide with your distinct soundscapes and experimental artistry. Can you tease any interesting sonic elements in the anticipated PIVOTAL?I think KMITR is a hint.  As far as teasing, hmmm, perhaps a few song titles: ‘Roll With Me’, ‘Don’t Count Yourself Out Yet,’ ‘Swimming’, ‘The Blues’, ‘Rainbow Until Dawn Remix’, ‘Stop’, ‘Underneath’, ‘Dry Spell’. Ok I think that’s all of them, and it’s an exclusive. You are the first to know all the songs on ‘PIVOTAL’. 😊 More than a tease!

7. With over two decades in the industry, three albums and several electrifying singles, what encouraged you to release a new entire body of work? Can you give us an insight into when the writing process for ‘PIVOTAL’ began? It started with KMITR in 2022. I was feeling this shift, like this is my time, I want to have my moment, my wave, in a sea of so many talented artists. I had this feeling…and it’s growing! Sweet!

8. Does ‘PIVOTAL’ reflect an overall concept?Yes, I am at a pivotal time of my life and career. I would love to make an impact with my music, it feels like it’s perfect timing. Perhaps other may be feeling similar pivotal shifts in their lives. We all know what change feels like after the fact, ‘Pivotal’ is more about leading up to the change.

9. How does the music video for ‘Kiss Me In The Rain’ illustrate the song’s meaning?About meeting someone that moves you, that you may learn from, or watch and be with and accomplish positive, helpful things together as a team. Like stopping a maniac chef from cutting up this adorable green creature that runs for help and ands in the booth where The Cowgirl & The Alien are sitting.

10. What do you want listeners to experience when listening to ‘Kiss Me In The Rain’?That love is a gift, and it feels so good to be loved and to love back. The first words I sing, “Love, to be loved, makes me feel like I will never die.” A tiny bit of immortality exists in love, perhaps that’s why so many people write, and sing about it, and perhaps we listen with our hearts open. Music can do that to hearts.

Thank you so much, Voice, for your love & support!! Xoxo Denise
